Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Dal is a staple in many Indian households, known for its simplicity, nutritional value, and versatility. However, this Peanut Sesame Dal takes it to another level by incorporating a rich and creamy peanut sesame paste. This addition may boost the protein content and also introduces a unique flavor profile that’s more umami and savoury. The blend of masoor and toor dal creates a balanced base, while the peanuts and sesame seeds elevate the dish without the extra effort. Not only is it incredibly flavorful, but it’s also super easy to make, requiring minimal prep and cook time.
Tips for Making the Perfect Peanut Sesame Dal
To help you create the perfect Peanut Sesame Dal, here are some tips and tricks that my mother shared:
- Soak Your Lentils: Soaking the masoor and toor dal overnight before cooking (or at least 30 minutes) helps them cook more evenly and reduces the overall cooking time. Plus it helps in reducing the bloat some get after consuming dal.
- Perfect the Paste: When making the peanut sesame paste, ensure you grind the roasted peanuts and sesame seeds to a smooth consistency. This will help the paste blend seamlessly into the dal without forming lumps. Taste the paste separately and adjust the ratios to your liking
- Flavorful Tadka: The tadka (tempering) is crucial for adding depth and aroma to the dal. Make sure to fry the cumin seeds, green chilis, ginger, and garlic until they’re aromatic and slightly brown, which enhances the overall flavor of the dish.
- Adjust to Taste: Feel free to adjust the amount of peanut sesame paste according to your taste preference. If you prefer a stronger nutty flavor, add a little more paste.
- Serving Suggestions: While this dal is traditionally served with hot rice, it’s incredibly versatile. Pair it with rotis, naan, or even as a soup with a side of crusty bread.
